What's the Difference Between the Epson F170 and Converted Epson Printers (L3250/L3110)?

In this week’s post, we’re addressing a common question: Are there real differences between the Epson F170 and the converted Epson models (L3250/L3110)?

If you're thinking about getting started in the world of product personalization or are simply looking for a reliable printer, you’ve probably come across two popular options: the converted Epson models (L3250/L3110) and the Epson SureColor F170. Although both are Epson printers, they are designed for completely different purposes.

Intended Use

  • Epson L3110/L3250: These are multifunctional printers designed for home or office use. They can print, scan, and copy. They're made for documents, schoolwork, and occasional photos. Although it’s possible to load sublimation ink, that’s not their original purpose.

  • Epson F170: A factory-original sublimation printer, built specifically for customizing products like mugs, t-shirts, phone cases, mousepads, etc.

Ink Type

  • Epson L3110/L3250: Uses standard ink, but can be adapted to work with sublimation inks in various colors.

  • F170: Comes with original Epson UltraChrome DS sublimation inks, specially formulated for this printer.

Durability

  • Converted Epson L3110/L3250: Over time, internal parts may wear down and the printhead can clog, requiring more intensive maintenance.

  • F170: Includes Epson's official warranty and support, since it's built for sublimation. However, like all printers, wear and tear can still occur over time.

Print Quality

  • Converted L3110/L3250: Delivers good quality for documents and photos.

  • F170: Delivers high-quality sublimation prints, with built-in color profiles that improve color results.

Price & Investment

  • Converted L3110/L3250: Lower cost. A good option if you're on a budget or already familiar with converted printers.

  • F170: Slightly higher investment, but it’s a professional printer ready to use right out of the box.

Lower Initial Investment: Epson L3110
Better Long-Term Performance & Print Quality: Epson F170
